The Pomsky is not a true breed but rather a cross between the Siberian Husky and the Pomeranian. The Pomeranian and Siberian Husky are not as different as they may appear. They are both from the Spitz dog type.
The Pomsky is believed to have originated in the U.S. in 2009 . The first recording of a litter being born was in Arizona in 2012.
This designer mixed-breed very quickly gained in popularity. It was voted the most popular designer dog of 2017.
Natural breeding between these dogs is unsafe requiring Pomskies to be brought into this world via artificial insemination. For this reason, the mother is always the Siberian Husky and the father is always the Pomeranian. Never the other way round.
To get somewhat of an idea of the type of behavioral traits to expect with a Pomsky, it all starts with the parents.
The Pomeranian is a miniature version of ancient Spitz sled dogs. Until the 1800s this breed was larger, although was still the smallest of the Spitz breeds.
Since then, Pomeranians have become quite different. They are now a toy breed with a thick coat, but one that was not built for warmth.
Pint sized and packaged with spunk, this fox like dog has become a favorite of those who prefer small dogs.
The Siberian Husky was originally a sled dog, born to haul heavy sleds over icy terrain for hours on end and to survive on frozen meat and sleep out in the snow!
Known for its stunning beauty with it's wolfish resemblance, high intelligence and playful nature, the Siberian is a very popular dog breed.
Both the Husky and Pomeranian are known to be wonderful family dogs with excellent traits, so it’s obvious that the Pomsky has inherited some excellent genes
Appearance can vary depending on which parents genes are more dominant. Often, they have the coloring and markings of a Siberian Husky combined with the fluffy coat and smaller size of the Pomeranian.
Pomskies are double coated dogs. The types of coats are Short - like the Siberian Husky, Plush- longer and similar to the coat of the Pomeranian and Wooly- similar to Plush only much longer and silkier.
The Pomsky breed comes in an array of colors and markings. There is the popular and much sought after coloration of Grey/ White body with the typical Husky mask. They may come in many formations of beautiful colors depending on which parent they take after most. Their eyes are almond shaped and come in blue, green, hazel, amber brown or heterochromia -different colored eyes.
Their body type is short and slightly long. They have substantial bone density for their size.
Pomsky puppies look like fluffy, miniature wolves and the fact that they keep this look into adulthood has added to their immense popularity.
It can be said that Pomskies have inherited the best traits from each of their parent. They obtain their beauty, intelligence, self assured attitudes and playful nature from the Husky side. They obtain their cuteness, adorable and loving nature from the Pomeranian side. This results in a playful, confident, intelligent and loving pet.
They are super curious, so they fit right in with kids. They are pack dogs and enjoy being around their family. They have lots of energy and thrive on outdoor activities. Without daily exercise and activities they may become bored and demonstrate destructive behaviors. They react well to early training which will contribute to a well balanced temperament.
They are adorable, fluffy little clowns who love attention.
